The development and utilization of new energy sources has been extensively studied in the world. Here, we report the development of flexible self-supported metal-free electrodes based on non-oxidized graphene multilayer (MLG) paper containing the lead iodide nanoparticles (PbI 2-NPs). The PbI 2-NPs was obtained and characterized by X-ray diffraction (XDR) and Raman spectroscopy. Supercapacitor containing the PbI 2-NPs in MLG electrodes was fabricated by a simple method and characterized using atomic force microscopy (AFM), cyclic voltammetry (CV) and galvanostatic charge-discharge techniques. The results show a flexible supercapacitor fashion reaching capacitance values of 154 F/g with high prospects in electronic area. Energy and power densities obtained for the pure MLG supercapacitor were 3.40 µWh cm-2 and 0.73 mW cm-2 , respectively. Regarding to PbI 2-NPs/MLG capacitor the energy and power density obtained were 3.50 Wh kg-1 and 1.10 kW kg-1. The results herein presented open the possibility to new energy storage devices using PbI 2-NPs and MLG flexible supercapacitor configuration.

The progressive size reduction of electronic components is experiencing bottlenecks in shrinking charge storage devices like batteries and supercapacitors, limiting their development into wearable and flexible zero-pollution technologies. The inherent long cycle life, rapid charge-discharge patterns, and power density of supercapacitors rank them superior over other energy storage devices. In the modern market of zero-pollution energy devices, currently the lightweight formula and shape adaptability are trending to meet the current requirement of wearables. Carbon nanomaterials have the potential to meet this demand, as they are the core of active electrode materials for supercapacitors and texturally tailored to demonstrate flexible and stretchable properties. With this perspective, the latest progress in novel materials from conventional carbons to recently developed and emerging nanomaterials toward lightweight stretchable active compounds for flexi-wearable supercapacitors is presented. In addition, the limitations and challenges in realizing wearable energy storage systems and integrating the future of nanomaterials for efficient wearable technology are provided. Moreover, future perspectives on economically viable materials for wearables are also discussed, which could motivate researchers to pursue fabrication of cheap and efficient flexible nanomaterials for energy storage and pave the way for enabling a widerange of material-based applications.

Carbon-graphene hybrid supporting platinum–tin electrocatalyst to enhance ethanol oxidation reaction

Direct ethanol fuel cell (DEFC) is promising source for mobile and portable applications, but the electrocatalysts are based on metal noble alloys or doping elements to minimize the incomplete ethanol oxidation and poisoning effect. While the main problem persists, this study describes the enhancement of ethanol oxidation reaction by adding graphene (G) to Vulcan XC-72R carbon black (C) metal support, with different C/G ratios. The Graphene were prepared from exfoliated graphite following dry in cool plasma under vacuum. The 60 wt% graphene hybrid support enhances the current density at 5% cyclic voltammetry (CV) and 127% chronoamperometry (CA) higher than carbon pure support in acid electrolyte. Whereas in alkaline, graphene (60 wt%) showed the highest electrochemical activity with an increase of current 82% (CV) and 130% (CA). Therefore, we demonstrated the enhancement of the catalyst electrochemical activity in both electrolytes through a simple synthesis method. The 40 wt% carbon and 60 wt% graphene hybrid support achieving higher performance in ethanol oxidation, evidencing a potential application in DEFC.
