Flexible Direction-of-Arrival Simulation for Automotive Radar Target Simulators

Abstract: In order to simulate realistic traffic scenarios, a radar target simulator must be able to generate multiple radar targets with different directions of arrival. The presented concept is able to generate an arbitrary amount of targets with individual directions of arrival for the radar under test. By measuring the radar channel, the novel approach enables target simulators to simulate arbitrary directions of arrival, while minimizing the required hardware. The optimum setup is derived for radars with a uniform … Show more

“…The modulation-based architecture employs a signal source which modulates the radar transmit signal in order to simulate targets with a velocity and distance. Furthermore, arbitrary directions-of-arrival of targets can be simulated, by combining multiple modulation-based RTSs [7]. The modulation principle relies on the frequency ramp timings of the CS-FMCW waveform.…”

“…The modulation principle relies on the frequency ramp timings of the CS-FMCW waveform. So far, current research considered only perfectly timed frequency ramps [3]- [7]. Since the application of dithered ramp timings (ramp timings with a random component) is an effective solution for interference mitigation [8], [9], and recommended by radar chip manufacturers [10], the influence of ramp timing deviations on the target simulation is of high interest.…”

“…A modulation-based RTS enables the simulation of ranges from 0 m to the maximum range of the radar system. The fully analog implementation allows for low costs and the simulation of scenarios with a high target count [5], [8]. In this paper, the hardware of a novel modulation-based RTS is presented that modulates the transmit signal directly without an intermediate frequency (IF) stage.…”
