Flexible Availability-Aware Differentiated Protection in Software-Defined Elastic Optical Networks

Abstract: I. INTRODUCTIONR ECENTLY, flexible-grid elastic optical networks (EONs) have attracted intensive attentions due to the high spectrum efficiency and agile resource allocation [1]. Different from the fixed-grid wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) networks, EONs utilize bandwidth variable transponders (BV-Ts) and switches (BV-WSS') that operate on a series of spectrallycontiguous frequency slots (FS') to set up lightpaths. Since these FS' have much narrower bandwidth than the conventional wavelength channel… Show more

“…The research related to the protection in EONs applies, among others, path-based methods Chen et al, 2015;Wang et al, 2015) with respect to two spectrum sharing policies: dedicated protection Chen et al, 2015) and shared protection (Wang et al, 2015). Also regarding survivable EONs a majority of papers focus only on unicast flows.…”

“…However, none of these studies have addressed the problem of network survivability. The work in [13][14][15]21] considered how to improve the data plane resiliency in SDONs and demonstrated several fast and efficient failure recovery mechanisms. Nevertheless, they considered neither the controller failures nor the data plane failures that might affect control channels.…”

“…A mathematical model is developed for calculating the availability of a sharedprotected connection in [12] and the problem of provisioning connections cost effectively while satisfying the connections' availability requirements is addressed in optical wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) meshed networks. A theoretical analysis on service availability in elastic optical networks (EONs) is presented in [13]. An availability-aware differentiated protection (ADP) algorithm and a service availability-aware backup reprovisioning strategy are proposed.…”
