Fleischner Society: Glossary of Terms for Thoracic Imaging

Abstract: Members of the Fleischner Society compiled a glossary of terms for thoracic imaging that replaces previous glossaries published in 1984 and 1996 for thoracic radiography and computed tomography (CT), respectively. The need to update the previous versions came from the recognition that new words have emerged, others have become obsolete, and the meaning of some terms has changed. Brief descriptions of some diseases are included, and pictorial examples (chest radiographs and CT scans) are provided for the majori… Show more

Finally, CT images were read again by 3 pulmonologists, and consensus was reached by discussing the presence or absence of these components in individual patients.…”

“…The individual lung parenchymal changes were preferentially defined according to the criteria of the "Fleischner Society's glossary of terms" [11]: Nodules of up to 3 cm were included and classified as consolidations. An increase in the density of the lung parenchyma with still recognizable vascular structures was defined as a ground-glass change.…”
