Flaxseed oil and α-lipoic acid combination reduces atherosclerosis risk factors in rats fed a high-fat diet

Abstract: BackgroundAtherosclerosis is a major manifestation of the pathophysiology underlying cardiovascular disease. Flaxseed oil (FO) and α-lipoic acid (LA) have been reported to exert potential benefit to cardiovascular system. This study tried to assess the effect of supplement of FO and LA combination on the atherosclerosis risk factors in rats fed a high-fat diet.MethodsLA was dissolved in flaxseed oil to a final concentration of 8 g/kg (FO+LA) when used. The rodent diet contained 20% fat. One-fifth of the fat wa… Show more

“…Owing to these problems encountered with fish oil, there is a need to look for alternative sources of omega‐3 fatty acids. Flaxseed oil usually contains more than 50% ALA and is one of the richest vegetarian sources of ALA . An effective avenue to increase the intake of omega‐3 fatty acids is through the incorporation of flaxseed oil in food products .…”

“…Due to its property as a safe, powerful antioxidant, ALA is widely used and well tolerated in the treatment of diabetic polyneuropathy (Coleman et al, 2001;Ziegler et al, 2006), atherosclerosis (Xu et al, 2012), Alzheimer's disease (Maczurek et al, 2008), acute Lung Injury (Lin et al, 2013). In the cardiovascular area, ALA attenuates cardiac dysfunction by reducing cardiomyocytes necrosis, apoptosis and inflammation after MI/R (Deng et al, 2013).…”
