Flavor Physics Constraints for Physics Beyond the Standard Model

Abstract: In the last decade, huge progress in experimentally measuring and theoretically understanding flavor physics has been achieved. In particular, the accuracy in the determination of the CKM elements has been greatly improved, and a large number of flavor changing neutral current processes, involving b → d, b → s and c → u transitions, and of CP violating asymmetries, have been measured. No evidence for new physics has been established. Consequently, strong constraints on new physics at high scale apply. In parti… Show more

“…To realize this we need only assume that new physics appears at an energy scale Λ in excess of the scale v, crudely that of the W and Z masses. This allows the construction of an effective Lagrangian in terms of operators of mass dimension d with d > 4 [36], where the nonobservation of non-SM invariant operators in flavor physics [2,7,37], allows us to impose SM electroweak gauge invariance in its construction. At leading power in v/Λ, there are then precisely ten dimension-six operators describing the semileptonic decay of the d quark.…”

“…In general in the MSSM, the quark and squark mass matrices are not simultaneously diagonalisable, which leads to flavour violation at tree level. However, stringent limits have been placed on flavour changing neutral currents from K, D and B meson studies setting tight limits on the possible contribution to FCNC from new physics [147][148][149]. In order to explain why flavour violation is so small in the MSSM, the Minimal Flavour Violation (MFV) framework [150][151][152] has been developed.…”
