Flavonols and Carotenoids in Yellow Petals of Rose Cultivar (Rosa ‘Sun City’): A Possible Rich Source of Bioactive Compounds

Abstract: Rose flowers have received increasing interest as rich sources of bioactive compounds. The composition of flavonols and carotenoids in yellow petals of Rosa 'Sun City' was determined by high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with photodiode array and mass spectrometric detectors (HPLC-PDA-MS). In total, 19 flavonols and 16 carotenoids were identified, some of which were first discovered in rose petals. Significant changes were observed in their profiles during seven blooming stages. Total flavonol cont… Show more

“…Two minor compounds, 41 and 43 , exhibited a pseudomolecular ion [M‐H] − at m/z 463 and a fragment ion at m/z 301 corresponding to two quercetin hexosides. Compound 48 ( t r = 32.7 min) was characterised by UV maxima at 264 nm and 343 nm, which is typical for kaempferol 3‐ O ‐glycosides . The pseudomolecular ion at m/z 593 gave a main fragment ion at m/z 285 attributed to kaempferol, and the loss of 308 amu was due to cleavage of the hexosylrhamnoside sugar moiety.…”

“…33 (t r = 32.7 min) was characterised by UV maxima at 264 nm and 343 nm, which is typical for kaempferol 3-O-glycosides. 37 The pseudomolecular ion at m/z 593 gave a main fragment ion at m/z 285 attributed to kaempferol, and the loss of 308 amu was due to cleavage of the hexosylrhamnoside sugar moiety. The compounds were tentatively assigned as nicotiflorin (kaempferol-3-O-rutinoside) or kaempferol-3-O-robinobioside (galactosylrhamnoside), which were both identified in Fraxinus sp.…”

“…The extraction of anthocyanins and flavonols were performed as previously described (Wan et al, 2018). About 0.2 g powder [fresh weight (FW)] of all samples was used for pigment extraction with 1.8 mL methanol: water: methane acid: trifluoroacetic acid (70:27:2:1, v/v/v/v) using ultrasonication at 20°C for 30 min.…”

HPLC analysis was outperformed on Waters 2695 system as described by Wan et al (2018). The wavelength was set at 520 nm for anthocyanin and 350 nm for flavonols.…”
