“…59,60 The limited evidence on the side effects of flavonoids could thus be related to the relatively scarce concentration in commercial formulations and low dermal availability. Nonetheless, with the booming of green and natural ingredients, new beneficial activities associated with this class of biomolecules, [61][62][63][64][65][66][67] and advances in topical formulations, 68,69 we cannot exclude a rise in reported side effects as a consequence of increased consumer exposure.…”

“…Paradoxically, in some cases, the application of phenolic compounds has shown beneficial effects in the therapy of vitiligo [165], an autoimmune-determined disturbance in melanogenesis manifesting itself as white patches on the skin [166]. Such cases occur when (1) phenolics are used as whitening agents in order simulate merging of the white vitiligo spots and lead to total whitening (depigmentation therapy; synthetic or semisynthetic phenolics), or (2) antioxidants protect the melanocytes and keratinocytes [167] (mostly natural or semisynthetic phenolics). Oxidative stress is considered one of the main inducers of auto-reactive T-cells against the epidermal melanocytes and the destruction of the latter [166].…”

“…Besides, luteolin, apparently blocks TNF and IL-1 to release IL-8 in melanocyte, indicating an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effect of luteolin on early vitiligo [84]. Nowadays, it is consistently considered that the combined use of flavonoids with psoralen UVA or trimethylpsoralen would be a desired vehicle for vitiligo treatment [91].…”
