Increased blood platelet activation plays an important role in cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). Recent experiments indicate that certain fruits and vegetables, including onion, garlic, and beetroot, have anti-platelet potential and therefore may reduce the likelihood of CVDs. While vegetables from the Cucuritaceae family are known to exerting beneficial antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects, their effects on blood platelet activation are poorly understood. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to determine the effect on platelet adhesion of preparations from selected cucurbits: pumpkin (Cucurbita pepo; fruit without seeds), zucchini (Cucurbita pepo convar. giromontina; fruit with seeds), cucumber (Cucumis sativus; fruit with seeds), white pattypan squash (Cucurbita pepo var. patisoniana; fruit without seeds) and yellow pattypan squash (Cucurbita pepo var. patisoniana, fruit without seeds). It also evaluates the activity of these preparations on enzymatic lipid peroxidation in thrombin-activated washed blood platelets by TBARS assay. The study also determines the anti-platelet properties of these five cucurbit preparations in whole blood by flow cytometry and with the total thrombus-formation analysis system (T-TAS) and evaluates the cytotoxicity of the tested preparations against platelets based on LDH activity. The results indicate that the yellow Cucurbita pepo var. patisoniana preparation demonstrated stronger anti-platelet properties than the other tested preparations, reducing the adhesion of thrombin-activated platelets to collagen/fibrinogen, and inhibiting arachidonic acid metabolism and GPIIb/IIIa expression on 10 µM ADP-activated platelets. None of the preparations was found to cause platelet lysis. Our findings provide new information on the anti-platelet activity of the tested cucurbit preparations and their potential for treating CVDs associated with platelet hyperactivity.

Background Taraxacum officinale (G.H. Weber ex Wiggers), commonly known as dandelion, is a herbaceous plant native to North America, Europe and Asia. This plant has been used for health purposes since ancient times. The phytochemicals present in different parts of the plant are responsible for its medicinal properties. In this review, we describe the main health properties of Taraxacum officinale. Main body of the abstract We searched for the main medicinal properties of Taraxacum officinale in the scientific literature, using the PubMed database. We selected 54 studies and we described twelve therapeutic properties, which are reported in previous studies. These properties are diuretic, hepatoprotective, anticolitis, immunoprotective, antiviral, antifungal, antibacterial, antiarthritic, antidiabetic, antiobesity, antioxidant and anticancer effects. We also found that the most frequently reported therapeutic effects include hepatoprotective, antioxidant and anticancer activities. Short conclusion In this review, we describe the medicinal properties of Taraxacum officinale reported in previous studies. Antioxidant, hepatoprotective and anticancer effects are mostly found in the scientific literature.

Platelets have long been associated with sustaining the balance between hemostasis and thrombosis. Platelets, however, are also involved in a wide range of biological activities, including inflammation, immunology, wound healing, cancer biology, and angiogenesis. Platelets' diverse roles are mediated by the expression of various adhesive and immune receptors and the secretion of a diverse array of bioactive proteins, ions stored in granules, and several lipid mediators. Platelets also release pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory, and angiogenic factors and shed microparticles into the bloodstream. The challenge for therapeutic intervention in non-hemostatic disease is identifying the factors that primarily inhibit specific targets implicated in platelets' complicated contribution to inflammation or tumor growth while leaving their hemostatic function intact. In addition, blood platelets are involved in infection and innate and adaptive immunity by mediating complicated vascular homeostasis via specialized receptors and granule release, RNA transfer, and mitochondrial secretion. Anti-platelet drugs/bioactive compounds are developed based on their platelet anti-aggregatory properties; however, very little information is available on their effects on non-hemostatic function. Therefore, a better understanding of the impact of the anti-platelet bioactive on the platelets' diverse roles and mechanisms may help develop new strategies and prevent CVD and other diseases. In this review, a comprehensive overview of platelet multifunctional roles in CVD and other diseases and dietary factors' modulatory effects are described.
