Flavonoid intake and cardiovascular disease mortality in a prospective cohort of US adults

Abstract: Background: Flavonoids are plant-based phytochemicals with cardiovascular protective properties. Few studies have comprehensively examined flavonoid classes in relation to cardiovascular disease mortality. Objective: We examined the association between flavonoid intake and cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality among participants in a large, prospective US cohort. Design: In 1999, a total of 38,180 men and 60,289 women in the Cancer Prevention Study II Nutrition Cohort with a mean age of 70 and 69 y, respectiv… Show more

“…Antioxidant compounds like phenolic acids, polyphenols and flavonoids scavenge free radicals such as peroxide, hydroperoxide of lipid hydroxyl and halt the oxidative mechanism that leads to degenerative diseases [29]. Flavonoids are proactive polyphenolic compounds found in most plants and cannot be synthesized or produced by the humans [30]. They were found to be effective in controlling various biological activities.…”

“…Flavonoids exhibit various beneficial properties in a multitude of disease states, including cardiovascular disease, neurodegenerative disorders and cancer (Gao et al, 2012;Master et al, 2012;McCullough et al, 2012). Luteolin, 3',4',5,7-tetrahydroxyflavone, is a common dietary flavonoid can be found in avariety of vegetables, fruits, and medicinal herbs (Sasaki et al, 2003).…”
