Flavonoid Biocides: Wood Preservatives Based on Condensed Tannins

Abstract: The Condensed tannins are natural wood preservatives found in high concentrations in the bark and wood of some tree species. Condensed tannin-containing bark extracts from loblolly pine (Pinus taeda) were evaluated äs wood preservatives using Standard methods. Bark extracts by themselves did not cause any reduction in weight loss of pressure-treated wood blocks at the retentions tested. However, they do have efficacy äs wood preservatives when complexed with copper (II) ions. The best experimental wood preserv… Show more

“…In the same way, many authors have underlined the direct relationship between durability and extractives [1,9,19,25,33,44,45]. They have shown that extractives play a key role in the biological resistance of many species [26,36,46,52].…”

“…Tannin-based wood preservatives have been prepared since the 1980s but their high water solubility represented a drawback that was not easy to eliminate (Laks et al 1988). In the following decades in-depth studies on tannin chemistry meant that new opportunities for the development of these compounds in wood science could be found (Pizzi 1994).…”

“…In a field of research whose purpose is to protect wood with natural substances, tannins are considered to be the ideal solution (Laks et al 1988); based on this finding, other research groups have decided to follow a similar line of research (Yamaguchi and Okuda 1998, Taylor et al 2006, Tascioglu et al 2012, Tondi et al 2015. Therefore, the objective of this study was to evaluate the preservative effect of tannic extract on biodeterioration of wood of Acacia mearnsii.…”
