Flash photolysis of biacetyl in gas phase. Rate constants of reactions between methyl and acetyl radicals

Abstract: The flash photolysis of biacetyl produces CO, CZH6, and CH3COCH3 as main products, and in small amounts COz, CzH4, and CH3CHO. The rate constants of reactions (2) and (3) (1)of' thermally equilibrated radicals were calculated from the amounts of products: k z = (2.98 + 0.17) lo'* dm3/mol. s k 3 = (2.43 f 0.14) 1O1O dm3/mol. s

“…Although the focus of the present work is the dissociation of diacetyl, we have also briefly compared the calculated association rate coefficient, the reverse of (), with available experimental measurements. At room temperature, the VRC-TST capture rate coefficient (3.2 × 10 −11 cm 3 molecule −1 s −1 ) is within the range of experimental results ((1.4−3.9) × 10 −11 cm 3 molecule −1 s −1 ), as shown in Figure . The present results predict a negative temperature dependence in agreement with the experimental results for 200−350 K in ref , although the experimental temperature dependence is somewhat stronger.…”

“…Calculated association rate coefficients for acetyl radicals at 1 Torr (dotted), 100 Torr (dashed), and in the high-pressure limit (solid). Also shown are the experimental measurements of Parkes (black open circles), Timonen et al (black open triangles), Anastasi and Maw (solid red squares), and Maricq and Szente (solid blue triangles).…”
