Flammability Properties of Polymer−Layered-Silicate Nanocomposites. Polypropylene and Polystyrene Nanocomposites

Abstract: Our continuing study of the mechanism of flammability reduction of polymer−layered-silicate nanocomposites has yielded results for polypropylene-graft-maleic anhydride and polystyrene−layered-silicate nanocomposites using montmorillonite and fluorohectorite. Cone calorimetry was used to measure the heat release rate and other flammability properties of the nanocomposites, under well-controlled combustion conditions. Both the polymer−layered-silicate nanocomposites and the combustion residues were studied by tr… Show more

“…It is usually felt that the change in the peak heat release rate occurs due to a change in the mass loss rate and there is a comparable reduction in both with both surfactants and all three polymers. The two clays give similar results and are comparable to literature data for PS, ABS and HIPS [25], [29], [30] and [31]. Also the TGA behavior is comparable to nanocomposites of crystallizable syndiotactic-PS with alkyl-imidazolium modified montmorillonites [24].…”

“…For MMT/modified polymer nanocomposites, the reduction in PHRR has been explained by a chemical and physical action of the inorganic layers dispersed in the polymer matrix [8] and [27].…”
