Flame Retardant Cotton Blend Highlofts

Abstract: Highloft nonwovens are low density fabrics characterized by a high ratio of thickness to weight per unit area, which means that highlofts contain considerable void volume. They are usually made of synthetic fibers. The present research effort was directed to study cotton blended highlofts. The major problems with using cotton in highlofts are cotton's high flammability and lack of resiliency. The objective of this research was to carry out single-bath chemical finishing of perpendicular-laid (P-laid) highlofts… Show more

“…Diammonium phosphate lowers the combustion temperature of the material, decreases maximum rates of weight loss, and causes a higher amount of char [9]. In earlier research [10][11][12][13][14][15], better flammability resistance resulted from synergism of phosphorus and nitrogen and from urea or certain urea derivative compounds. [8].…”

“…The process by which a combustible substance can be busted into flames, producing fire or combustion, or can be exploded is called flammability. Cotton is highly flammable [ 18 ]. It propagates fire easily and burns quickly.…”

“…At the Southern Regional Research Center (SRRC), FR barriers have been developed with phosphate-based nondurable (to washing) formulations [13][14][15] for grey unbleached cotton fabrics. For comparison, a commercially available, nitrogen-containing phosphonic acid salt-based FR chemical, Flovan Ò cyanoguanidine (CGN; ''F'') was acquired from Huntsman Corporation (Huntsman Corporation, High Point, NC, USA, acquired it from CIBA, Europe).…”
