Fixed-Wing UAV Flight Operation under Harsh Weather Conditions: A Case Study in Livingston Island Glaciers, Antarctica

Abstract: How do the weather conditions typical of the polar maritime glaciers in the western Antarctic Peninsula region affect flight operations of fixed-wing drones and how should these be adapted for a successful flight? We tried to answer this research question through a case study for Johnsons and Hurd glaciers, Livingston Island, using a fixed-wing RPAS, in particular, a Trimble UX5 UAV with electric pusher propeller by brushless 700 W motor, chosen for its ability to fly long distances and reach inaccessible area… Show more

“…The meteorological data from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) are widely used in the Antarctic region for different purposes (Semmler et al, 2016;Bello et al, 2022). In 2019, ECMWF implemented a substantial upgrade of its Integrated Forecasting System (IFS Cycle 46r1), which significantly improved global medium-range weather forecasts (Haiden et al, 2020).…”

“…Thus, the resulting loss of power can potentially limit the UAV's flight time [41], and in the worst cases, causes the UAV to shut down and crash. On the other hand, environmental conditions [42] (i.e., weather) can impact UAV performance. For instance, proper UAV performance is affected by strong winds [43], heavy rain [44], and extreme temperatures as follows:…”
