Abstract. In this paper we present the long term monitoring of ambient gaseous concentrations within the framework of the IDAF (IGAC-DEBITS-AFRICA) program. This study proposes for the first time an analysis of long-term inorganic gas concentrations (1998 to 2007) of SO 2 , NO 2 , HNO 3 , NH 3 and O 3 , determined using passive samplers at seven remote sites in West and Central Africa. Sites are representative of several African ecosystems and are located along a transect from dry savannas-wet savannas-forests with sites at Banizoumbou (Niger), Katibougou and Agoufou (Mali), Djougou (Benin), Lamto (Cote d'Ivoire), Zoetele (Cameroon) and Bomassa (Congo). The strict control of measurement techniques as well as the validation and inter-comparison studies conducted with the IDAF passive samplers assure the quality and accuracy of the measurements. For each type of African ecosystem, the long term data series have been studied to document the levels of surface gaseous concentrations. The seasonal and interannual variability have also been analyzed as a function of emission source variations. We compared the measured West and Central African gas Correspondence to: M. Adon (adonatma@yahoo.fr) concentrations to results obtained in other parts of the world. Results show that the annual mean concentrations of NO 2 , NH 3 , HNO 3 measured in dry savannas are higher than those measured in wet savannas and forests that have quite similar concentrations. Annual mean NO 2 concentrations vary from 0.9±0.2 in forests to 2.4±0.4 ppb in the dry savannas, NH 3 from 3.9±1.4 to 7.4±0.8 ppb and HNO 3 from 0.2±0.1 to 0.5±0.2 ppb. Annual mean O 3 and SO 2 concentrations are lower for all ecosystems and range from 4.0±0.4 to 14.0±2.8 and from 0.3±0.1 to 1.0±0.2 ppb, respectively. A focus on the processes involved in gas emissions from dry savannas is presented in this work, providing explanations for the high concentrations of all gases measured at the three dry savannas sites. At these sites, seasonal concentrations of all gases are higher in the wet season. Conversely, concentrations are higher in the dry season in the wet savannas. Introduction: A novel multipollutant diffusive sampler for HONO, HNO 3 , and NO 2 was used and tested at four different libraries/archives in different seasons. Two were located in Switzerland in Bern (Swiss National Library) and Geneve (Bibliotheque de Geneve), both with HVAC system equipped with filters for pollutants removal, and the other two in the Czech Republic in Teplice (Regional Library) and in Prague (National Archives), where in this case the former is naturally ventilated and whereas the latter is equipped with HVAC system with filtration. Results:The ratios between indoor and outdoor concentrations of NO 2 showed a greater penetration of pollutants indoors in the naturally ventilated library than in the filtrated archives. The indoor concentrations of HNO 3 were very low probably due to the high deposition velocity of nitric acid on available surfaces. HONO concentration values were usually lower outdoors, which indicated that HONO was produced by reactions on indoor surfaces. Conclusion:The results revealed that the reproducibility of the new multipollutant sampler measurements was reasonable (according to EU directives) for NO 2 and HNO 3 and that the newly developed multipollutant sampler can be used in archives and libraries, allowing to map the pollutants distribution indoors. Due to high efficiency of insulating systems normally employed and of filtration systems, the values recorded for the pollutants indoors are often lower than the detection limits.

Nitrogen Dioxide (NO(2)) is a common urban air pollutant that results from the combustion of fossil fuels. It causes serious human health effects, is a precursor to the formation of ground level ozone, another serious air pollutant, and is one of the six criteria air pollutants established by the United States (U.S.) Clean Air Act (CAA). Ogawa Passive Sampling Devices (PSDs) for NO(2) were collocated and operated at six NO(2) Federal Reference Method (FRM) monitor locations in the El Paso, Texas area for the 2004 calendar year. Passive samples were taken at 2-week, 3-week, and 4-week intervals and compared against the continuously operating FRM monitors. Results showed that the collective NO(2) annual arithmetic mean for all passive monitors was identical to the NO(2) mean for all FRM monitors. Of the individual locations, three passive annual NO(2) means were identical to their corresponding FRM means, and three passive annual NO(2) means differed from their corresponding FRM means by only one part per billion (ppb). Linear correlation analysis between all readings of the individual NO(2) PSDs and FRM values showed an average absolute difference of 1.2 ppb with an r (2) of 0.95. Paired comparison between high and low concentration annual NO(2) sites, seasonal considerations, and interlab quality control comparisons all showed excellent results. The ease of deployment, reliability, and the cost-savings that can be realized with NO(2) PSDs could make them an attractive alternative to FRM monitors for screening purposes, and even possibly an equivalent method for annual NO(2) monitoring. More tests of the Ogawa NO(2) PSD are recommended for different ecosystem and climate regimes.
