Five-Year Prognosis after Radical Prostatectomy in a Patient with Localized Prostate Cancer and Incidental Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma

Abstract: We present a white male patient with an initial prostate-specific antigen level of 69 ng/ml, referred for urological evaluation. He was found to be free of prostatitis but diagnosed for prostate adenocarcinoma without any indications of metastatic disease. Lymphadenectomy then revealed lymphadenopathy of low-grade non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Five-year follow-up after radical retropubic prostatectomy (RRP) showed no evidence of metastatic or local prostate cancer recurrence. In addition, no radiation or chemotherap… Show more

“…have raised the intriguing possibility that lymphomas could potentially protect against PCa progression. According to these authors, such protection could result from the over-expression of circulating transmembrane molecule CD44 in leukemia and lymphoma patients [15]. Some experimental studies support a tumor suppressor function of CD44 in lymphomas; silencing of CD44 expression may facilitate lymphoma genesis [31].…”

“…Synchronous tumors with prostate adenocarcinoma have been reported in the literature [1][2][3][4][5][6][7]. The coincidental discovery of lymphoma during pelvic lymphadenectomy for localized prostate cancer has been estimated to be between 0.2% [2] and 1.2% [6,8].…”

“…207 Cases of incidental prostatic lymphoma in association with prostate carcinoma have been reported. 187,208,207 In a review of 4319 prostatectomies at Johns Hopkins Hospital, only 10 (0.2%) cases of incidental prostate lymphoma were identified. 209 In most of these cases 208,209 the lymphoma was low grade, and the authors recommended that prostatectomy, as a treatment of carcinoma, should not be denied.…”
