Five Orders-of-Magnitude Enhancement of Two-Photon Absorption for Dyes on Silver Nanoparticle Fractal Clusters

Abstract: Strong enhancement of the two-photon absorption of organic molecules near silver nanoparticle fractal clusters has been observed and has been exploited to yield composite materials with very strong two-photon absorption and two-photon-excited fluorescence properties. Measurements on cluster films coated with chromophoric polymer or with thiol-bound chromophores give spatially-averaged enhancements of 1000 and 20 000, respectively. Two-photon fluorescence microscopy studies show that the enhancements are spatia… Show more

“…15 It is also important to remark that luminescence enhancement occurs even for the emissions centered at Ϸ585 and Ϸ623 nm. This is understood considering the influence of aggregates that usually originate hot spots of the electromagnetic field 19 that may originate the main contribution for intensification of the orange and red spectrum. 13,14 This effect was also reported for lead-germanate glasses.…”

“…The slides were washed extensively with water and air-dried. Silver island film (SIF) deposition was accomplished as described previously [13][14][15]. Briefly, ten drops of fresh 5% NaOH solution were added to a stirring silver nitrate solution (0.25 g in 35 mL of water).…”

“…The effects of silver islands on fluorescence were studied experimentally [8][9][10] and theoretically [11,12] in the 1980's. More recent studies include two-photon excitation near metallic particles [13][14][15], emission near roughened electrods [16], light deposited silver [17], deposited colloids [18] and silver fractals [19,20]. The increased brightness of the dyes near silver islands enables the measurements of the DNA hybridization kinetics [21].…”

“…Phosphonate ylid 36 was synthesized as reported previously (27,28). The same HWE procedures as described for preparation of 2 and 5 were carried out except that tetraethyl 1,4-xylylenediphosphonate was replaced by 36, consequently 1 and 4 were synthesized in good yields.…”

“…After evaporation of the solvent, the crude product was purified by chromatography on a silica gel column eluted with EtOAc/MeOH (10/1, v/v) to give the title product (60 mg) in a yield of 55%. (27,28).…”
