Five New Cucurbitane-Type Triterpenoid Glycosides from the Rhizomes of Hemsleya penxianensis with Cytotoxic Activities

Abstract: Five new cucurbitane-typetriterpenoid glycosides, named Xuedanoside F–J (1–5), were obtained from the rhizomes of Hemsleya penxianensis (Xue dan), which belongs to the family of Cucurbitaceae. These new compounds were elucidated byspectroscopic analysis, including 1D, 2D NMR, and HR-ESI-MS spectra. Additionally, all the isolates were evaluated for cytotoxicity against three human cancer cell lines (Hela, MCF-7, and A-549) with the IC50 ranging from 2.25 to 49.44 µM in vitro with treatment 48 h and showed low c… Show more

“…The aerial parts of Tricholepis eburnea, collected from the Ziarat Valley in Pakistan's province of Balochistan, contained a unique withanolide glucoside named trichoside B (274, structures in Figure 11). This compound was found in the n-butanolic fraction of a 75% methanolic extract [187], and it has also been previously identified in the plant Gypsophila trichotoma [188].…”

“…Gan et al (2011) confirmed previously postulated conclusions that acetylation of the hydroxyl group at the C-25 position of sapogenin increases the cytotoxicity of cucurbitane derivatives. Chen et al (2019a) indicate, however, that the presence of a carbonyl group (C = O) in C-11 or both C-11 and C-7 may be important for the activity against the MCF-7 and A-549 cell lines. It should be underlined that these studies were not focused on a comparison of a series of closely related compounds, thus making it difficult to draw any general conclusions.…”

“…1). By comparison of NMR spectroscopic data with literature values, the known compounds were identified as hemsgiganoside B (4) (Chen et al, 2003), guaiacin B (5) (Shaker et al, 1999), araliasaponin I (6) (Song et al, 2000),…”
