Five New 2-Arylbenzofuran Derivatives from Morus wittiorum

Abstract: Five new 2-arylbenzofuran derivatives wittifurans A-C, F and G (1-5) have been isolated from the stem bark of Morus wittiorum. Their structures were determined on the basis of spectroscopic analysis. Compounds 1, 3-5 were evaluated for their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities respectively.

“…Moreover, trans -resveratrol, a phytoalexin produced naturally by several plants including grape and peanut when under attack by pathogens such as bacteria or fungi, has been reported to possess a variety of biological and pharmacological actions (23), and is receiving a renewed interest as a potential nutritional supplement for extending the lifespan of humans, although there is no published evidence on any clinical trial for efficacy in humans (24). Meanwhile, 2-arylbenzofuran derivatives including moracin have recently been attracted much attention as promising phytochemicals due to their anti-cancer, anti-inflamamtory, anti-hyperlipidemic, antimicrobial, and antioxidant activities (7,14,25,26). Thus, mulberry twigs having resveratrol derivatives and moracin are useful as promising sources of nutraceuticals and cosmeceuticals.…”

“…In particular, the content and compositions of functional constituents in different parts of mulberry trees varied considerably amongst some Morus species (1214). A suitable heat processing is necessary to make the best quality processed foods using mulberry twigs for removing peculiar off-flavors like smell of greens and beans.…”

“…9,10) Many benzofuran derivatives were reported to show potent anti-inflammatory activity and were among COX-2 inhibitors. 11,12) On the other hand, salicylic acid and salicylates exhibit a pronounced anti-inflammatory activity, for example the salicylanilides A and B are selective inhibitors of interlukin-12 (IL-12) p40 production which is a subunit component of IL-12 and IL-6-23. IL-12 is involved in type 1 helper T cell (TH1) mediated inflammation in both normal immune defence as well as inflammatory diseases such as rheumatoid activities, asthma, psoriases and Crohn's disease.…”

“…32S, Supporting Information). Interestingly, analogues of 4 have also been reported to exist in racemic form [20]. Therefore, compound 4 was determined to be a racemic mixture of 5-(5-hydroxy-7-methyl-7-(4-methylpent-3-en-1-yl)-7H-furo[2,3-f]chromen-2-yl)benzene-1,3-diol.…”
