Fitness in evolutionary art and music: a taxonomy and future prospects

Abstract: This paper is concerned with the idea of fitness in art and music systems that are based on evolutionary computation. A taxonomy is presented of the ways in which fitness is used in such systems, with two dimensions: what the fitness function is applied to, and the basis by which the function is constructed. A large collection of papers are classified using this taxonomy. The paper then discusses a number of ideas that have not been used for fitness evaluation in evolutionary art and which might be valuable in… Show more

“…The system can be used to start from random sequences of notes, and to evolve towards a desired combination of features by specifying a fitness function that combines appropriate drivers. Alternatively, it can be used to create a transition between two kinds of material; as discussed by Magnus [15], one interesting way to use genetic algorithms (or other AI techniques) is to play out the evolutionary process as a performance; what Johnson [12] has called a "seeds and targets" approach.…”

“…So, the fitness function should be grounded in some theory of aesthetics; perhaps one of the established theories, or perhaps a new kind of theory that is distinctive to computer art or evolutionary art. Johnson [18] reviews a number of possible ideas on which such fitness functions could be built.…”

“…3.2, there is a huge number of measures that try to bridge this gap, see e.g. [9,6,16,19] for an overview. Some of them are strongly correlated, while others address different aspects of the color distribution.…”
