Background: Fishing activity is a major source of marine litter on beaches, but most studies focus on recreational beaches. In this study, we assessed the abundance, composition, source and spatial distribution of marine litter on ten fishing beaches along Palk Bay, on the southeast coast of India. We also used social media to collect data on the impact of fishing litter on marine animals in the study area. Results: A total of 4,227 marine litter and their average density of 0.70 items/m2 were collected. Plastic (84.54%) is the most abundant in the study area, followed by cloths (7.46%), glass (5.19%), and rubber (3.47%). From the result, the value of CCI ranges from 6.26 to 25.7 indicating that the coast is "moderately clean" to "extremely dirty". The majority of the marine litter collected originated from fishing activity. The most common are string and cord, fishing lines, fishing gear, floats and buoys. Conclusion: The presence of this type of marine litter can produce serious environmental issues, such as ghost fishing, that impacts a large variety of marine species. A total of 25 of the olive ridley turtles (Lepidochelys olivacea) were entangled in fishing litter between 2018 and 2020. Most of the reported entanglements were due to discarded or lost fishing gear, which shows the importance of managing this type of litter in India. It is important to manage the litter related to the fishing activity by educating fishermen and organizing clean-up campaigns.

“…Foram realizadas duas coletas: uma em 27 de agosto de 2020, no período de restrição de acesso às praias devido ao risco imposto pela pandemia do coronavírus, iniciado pelo Decreto nº 6.111, de 6 de abril de 2020 (Aracaju, 2020a), e finalizado pelo Decreto nº 6.230, de 28 de agosto de 2020 (Aracaju, 2020b); e outra coleta em 18 de março de 2021, após um período de aproximadamente seis meses sem restrições no acesso de banhistas à faixa de areia. Ambas as coletas foram realizadas em horários de maré baixa e todos os resíduos sólidos antropogênicos visíveis na área delimitada foram recolhidos, priorizando, dessa forma, macrodetritos (20 a 100 mm) e megadetritos (> 100 mm) (Ramos & Pessoa, 2019). O descarte irregular de lixo em ambientes marinhos ou terrestres, a contaminação ambiental, a urbanização desenfreada e o trânsito de veículos automotores na faixa de areia representam riscos à vida e à saúde de seres humanos e animais marinhos. Este estudo teve como objetivo quantificar e classificar os resíduos marinhos antropogênicos encalhados na praia, além de identificar qualitativamente outras fontes de perturbações antrópicas no litoral sul de Aracaju (Sergipe, Brasil). Os resultados apontam para o aumento de 229,8% no volume de resíduos sólidos antropogênicos na faixa de areia em período sem restrições de acesso relacionados à pandemia de covid-19, quando comparado a um período com acesso restrito à praia. Os resíduos plásticos representaram 88,6% do volume total de lixo marinho e as atividades de turismo e recreação nas praias foram as principais fontes de descarte. Outros impactos antrópicos relacionados a comportamentos sociais foram identificados, como o tráfego de veículos automotores nas praias e as ações ineficientes de serviços públicos que colaboraram para o acúmulo de resíduos sólidos na área costeira. Todos os registros mapeados têm em comum atos de desordem que geram a percepção de deterioração e de ausência de leis, normalizando comportamentos nocivos de grande impacto na degradação do ecossistema marinho.
