Fishes of Indiana streams: current and historic assemblage structure

Abstract: We examined Indiana fish assemblages using taxonomy and ecological categories to assess temporal shifts in community structure and recent environmental relationships. Historic (1945Historic ( ) and recent (1996Historic ( -2007 presence/absence data were compiled by subbasin and analyzed with Nonmetric Multidimensional Scaling (NMS) ordination and by species richness. Canonical Correspondence Analysis (CCA) was used to test taxonomic identity and ecological category abundance data for explanation with recent (… Show more

“…Surveys of aquatic assemblages conducted several years apart have demonstrated degradation (Woodward et al 2002;Jacquemin & Pyron 2011), change without clear degradation (Burgmer et al 2007;Rennie & Evans 2012), no clear change (Johnson et al 1994;Bode et al 2004 in most cases), or improvement (Milosevic et al 2012). Macroinvertebrate community quality appeared to increase slightly in the present study but did not clearly differ between surveys performed in 1999 and 2011.…”

“…; Jacquemin & Pyron ). In Indiana streams, a very similar phenomenon was observed where historic collections had higher occurrences of fluvial specialists such as the gravel chub Erimystax punctatus , bigeye chub Hybopsis amblops and brindled madtom Noturus miurus when compared to contemporary collections (Jacquemin & Pyron ). There was also an observed increase over time in the abundance and distribution of cosmopolitan generalist species such as the redear sunfish Lepomis microlophus and dusky darter Percina sciera .…”
