Fish reproductive guilds downstream of dams

Abstract: Fish reproductive guilds were used to evaluate the responses of species with different reproductive strategies during two different periods of post-dam construction. The data used for the comparisons were collected in the upper Paraná River floodplain (Brazil), downstream of the Porto Primavera dam, 2 and 10 years after impoundment. The abundance (catch per unit effort, CPUE), species richness, evenness and structure of communities, all within reproductive guilds, were used to test the hypothesis that these me… Show more

“…However, in contrast to temperate systems, in the Neotropics knowledge on specific traits associated with habitat alteration caused by dam closure does not exist for the majority of species due to the lack of studies and the high diversity of these systems. Data availability and previously described responses to habitat alterations related to damming determined the choice of traits to be tested (e.g., Vasconcelos, Alves, & Gomes, ; —reproduction and preference for lotic current; Albrecht, ; —Diet; McManamay & Frimpong, ; —life history; Pelicice et al., —migration). There was therefore a priori limitation on the trait information currently available.…”
