Fish fauna in Iberian Mediterranean river basins: biodiversity, introduced species and damming impacts

Abstract: 1.We used a basin approximation to analyse distribution patterns of different components of biodiversity (taxonomic richness, endemicity, taxonomic singularity, rarity) and conservation status of freshwater fish fauna in 27 Mediterranean Iberian rivers. 2.Basin area alone explained more than 80% of variation in native species richness. Larger basins featured not only a higher number of native species, but also more endemic and rare species and less diversified genera than smaller ones. 3.In contrast, smaller b… Show more

“…Running waters belong to the most intensively used and altered ecosystems of the world (Saunders et al, 2002;Clavero et al, 2004;Levin et al, 2009). In Europe, about 80% of rivers are affected by water pollution, water removal for hydropower and irrigation, structural alterations and the impact of dams (Schinegger et al, 2011).…”

“…Such effects will be strong for the 45 species that are endemic to the Jinsha segment (see Table 1 in Supplementary Material). Dramatic changes of fish communities through extirpation of endemic species and increases in generalists were reported from other impounded rivers (Rahel 2002;Clavero et al 2004;Głowacki and Penczak 2013).…”

“…In its original distribution area the bleak occupies habitats with slow water (Brabrand, 1983). The attenuation of natural flow fluctuations in water bodies caused by dams has already been associated with the presence of other introduced species (Bernardo et al, 2003;Clavero et al, 2004).…”
