Fish catch and fishing practices in the Nam Theun 2 Reservoir and watershed (Lao PDR)

Abstract: A fish catch and fishing practice monitoring survey were conducted from 2008 to 2014 in villages adjacent to the Nam Theun 2 Reservoir and its upstream tributaries. The reservoir fisheries exhibited – the three expected phases following impoundment (i.e. trophic upsurge, trophic depletion and stabilization, respectively). This study focused on assessing fish catches and fishing practices from communities living next to the reservoir, and those living upstream of the reservoir, over these phases, and to identif… Show more

“…The Nam Theun 2 hydropower Reservoir (NT2) area [33] was selected for this survey. Numerous villages are settled along the reservoir [34] and the two rivers downstream that are the Nam Theun River (NTH) and the Xe Bangfai River (XBF). Fisheries are further recognized as an important source of income for those villages and might be affected by the evolution of fish diversity.…”

“…The NT2 Reservoir was impounded in 2008 and tends to reach an ecological equilibrium, despite significant exploitation of the ichtyo resources (Cottet et al, 2016;Cottet and Visser, 2017). More than 2000 households rely on the O. niloticus for food.…”

“…This reservoir was impounded in April 2008 and after a classical trophic upsurge, the system seems to have reached ecological stabilization in 2011 (Cottet et al, 2016). The Nile tilapia represents the major part of the catch by the local fishery and is of significant economic importance (52% of relative biomass contribution of total catch, (Cottet and Visser, 2017). Biological parameters of this fish species constitute essential data to assess population dynamic and the exploitation level for fisheries management.…”

“…The Nam Theun 2 reservoir impounded in 2008 is shallow (8 m depth on average) and its surface area varies between 489 km 2 at full supply level to 86 km 2 in the dry season. Sixteen hamlets are established along the reservoir, a part from resettlement, with a total households of more than 2,000 in 2014 and around 85% of that population is involved in fishing [21].…”

“…Catch monitoring based on landings started in 2008 [21] and has been regularly implemented since then. The catch varied between 6.2 kg/household/day in 2009 just after impoundment and 2.8 kg/ household/day in 2012-2013, with a rebound after 2013 (4.3 kg/ household/day in 2015; [22].…”
