Fish-Based Baby Food Concern—From Species Authentication to Exposure Risk Assessment

Abstract: In this work, two different but complementary approaches were used to evaluate the reliability of fish-based baby foods as a source of safe nourishment for babies. More specifically, barcoding analysis based on the Cytochrome Oxidase I sequences was used for fish species authentication and an analysis of metal/metalloid levels was performed to estimate the exposure risk assessment derived from consumption of selected fish-based baby food in infants and toddlers. COI DNA barcoding revealed that in three samples… Show more

“…In freshwater environments, the main fishery from the La Plata basin (South America) revealed muscle levels of Ag below the limit of detection [ 46 ]. Similar results were reported for freshwater fish from the New Caledonia lagoon [ 47 ], in fish collected from a fish farm located in Nahuel Huapi National Park in the northern Patagonia Andes Mountains, Argentina [ 48 ] and in fish collected from a fish farm from Beijing [ 49 ]. Irrelevant levels of Ag bioaccumulation described for freshwater ecosystems can be accountable to a low bioavailability of Ag or to the impact of low salinity on Ag bioaccumulation potential.…”

“…Most likely as a consequence of the various safety scandals it overcame, infant formula is the food product that raises the most mistrust, the second one on the list being potty with vegetable and fish. For the latter, studies underline chemical contaminations due to fish they contain [67].…”

“…10 Besides a great financial loss, the fraudulent adulteration of Atlantic cod could also negatively affect the protection of human health and depleted species. 10,11 To this end, the development of a robust and fast method to identify Atlantic cod is of paramount importance.…”
