Introduction: The Chilika lagoon in south Odisha, India was ecologically degraded from 1985 onwards by reduction of its aquatic (fish + prawn + shrimp) catches along with reduction in salinity, hydraulic regime, water exchange, aquatic weeds invasion, and sediment influx. The aquatic catch was 8669MT in year 1985-1986 gradually reduced to 1274MT during 1995-1996 from Odisha Fisheries Dept. records which resulted in poor economic condition of ≈0,2million fishermen and they migrated to adopt other livelihood. One direct tidal inlet dredged (Sipakuda) and Naraj barrage in the apex of South Mahanadi Delta were the major hydraulic interventions made to regain hydraulic regime. After the hydraulic interventions, the eco system restored, and the aquatic catch surged but it was insufficient to livelihood sustenance for the fishermen community of the Chilika, so that they are forced for alternate occupation and migration. Methodologies: Fish catch data collected for 30 years and soft computing models linear regression, Multi Linear Perception (ANN), SMOorg (SVM) and the Random Forest algorithms (Weka Software) are used to predict the fish catch data of the lagoon for coming decade from 2020 to 2030. The effects of major hydraulic interventions are analyzed and the soft computing method of the fish and shrimp catch prediction of the Chilika has been attempted for the first time except some statistical approaches. Results: The Random Forest is found to be the preferred algorithm followed by the MLP model. The amount of catch remained around 12-13TMT if the variables and the present status of the lagoon is maintained. The combined effect of the Sipakuda Tidal inlet and the effective operation of the Naraj barrage have maintained the sustainable aqua catch. The present study shall be an immense help for the lake users and policy makers to augment aquatic catch, and alternate livelihood fishers community of the Chilika lagoon.

In this article, hydrographic processes of a tropical coastal lagoon is studied that control inherent biological mechanisms of the lagoon environment. Realizing the interest of environmentalists over physio-chemical studies of a wetland tropical wetland system on the western boundary of the Bay of Bengal, a high-resolution intensive vertical hydrographic field campaign was carried during monsoon to uncover peculiarity in vertical hydrographic processes that was long-awaited to address many environmental issues. Vertical hydrographic profiles on spatio-temporal scale were made at nine stations in a zonal direction of the Chilika lagoon system. Results of vertical variability of salinity showed the presence of higher saline water over less saline water in the central-western region. The higher and lower water temperature in the western and eastern parts of the lagoon, respectively, indicated temperature dipole between the two regions. The encapsulation of water mass having higher temperature by the water of lower temperature at the central region resulted evolution of thermal inversion. The highest dissolved oxygen concentration was observed in the sub-surface layers of the western part of the lagoon. However, a layer of near-hypoxia occurred below 1.5 m depth in the central region. This study proposes comprehensive inter-seasonal studies to address the vertical variability of biogeochemical parameters and the fate of organic flux.

Analysis of Morphometric Character of Chromis Fish in Indonesia and Korea

There are more than 350 species of Chromis fish in the world. Its distribution covers tropical and subtropical water areas. Spesific geographical conditions determine fish development. This study aims to analyze morphometric meristik, and the differences between chromis fish characters in Indonesia and Korea waters. The research methods were consisted of descriptive methods, Kruskal-Wallis, and Mann Whitney test.The result showed the total length of Abudefduf sexfasciatus found in Palabuhan ratu and Pramuka Island water territories are ranged from 9.9 to 10.2 cm and 7.7 to 13.0 cm.This fish has a dorsal fin, caudal fin which consists of 12-17 weak fingers, and ventral fin consists of 1 hard finger and 4-6 weak fingers. Abudefduf vaigiensis’ found in Palabuhan ratu, Buton Island, Sorong, and Korea water has each ranging total length from 6.0 to 10.6 cm, 10.9 -12.3 cm, 11 cm, and 5.0 to 8.6 cm.The differences are in the caudal and ventral fin. Morphometric characters of Abudefduf sexfasciatus found in Palabuhan ratu and Pramuka Island water territories relatively similar. Morphometric characters of Abudefduf vaigiensis found in Korean waters was not significantly different with Palabuhan ratu, Buton Island, and Sorong water territories.
