“…The year 1917 had seen the partial exit of Russia from the conflict together with the entry of the United States (although it was only during the latter half of 1918 that the effect of American intervention would be fully felt). This is echoed in Table where, compared with the equivalent tables in previous years (see Granshaw, , , , ), the Eastern Front has been renamed Eastern Theatre and its column width drastically reduced, indicating the 1918 focus on the Western Front. Notwithstanding this, the Southern Front (primarily between Italy and Austria‐Hungary), together with the Middle East conflict (mainly between Britain and Turkey) were still very active theatres.…”

“…Granshaw remarks the sophistication of German technology at that time, headed by companies such as Zeiss, which fabricated equipment for photogrammetric restitution and special cameras, such as binocular periscopes. [7] At the time, photogrammetry still wasn't used for the production of tri-dimensional models, but rather to correct distortions caused in the cartographic plane by the perspective of capture. This operation, essentially manual, employed stereographic equipment that made pairs of overlapping pictures coincide over a plotter, correcting their angular discrepancies by means of an optical system, so that one could combine them in an orthographic projection (an image with no vanishing points).…”

“…The previous three December Editorials in the Record (Granshaw, , , ) outlined the role of aerial photography during the first two‐and‐a‐half years of the First World War. The current Editorial extends that account to 1917, looking back a century to the fourth year of the conflict.…”
