First Steps Toward Positive Behavior Support in the Netherlands: A Pilot Study Exploring the Effectiveness of a Training for Staff

Abstract: Despite the effectiveness of positive behavior support (PBS) in reducing challenging behaviors, the availability of PBS for individuals with intellectual disabilities is limited in many countries including the Netherlands. Training care staff supporting individuals with intellectual disabilities in PBS may be a way to improve the provision of PBS. We aimed to explore the preliminary effectiveness of a PBS training for staff in reducing challenging behaviors of individuals with intellectual disabilities. Using … Show more

“…CB was considered the dependent variable for evaluation of the effectiveness of the interventions. The most commonly used instrument in this type of study was the ABC [ 34 , 35 , 160 , 161 , 162 , 163 , 164 , 165 , 166 , 167 , 168 ]. The other instruments used were BPI-01 [ 172 , 174 ], CCB [ 175 , 176 , 177 ], ABC-C [ 170 , 171 ], BPI-PIMD [ 173 ], BPI-S [ 138 ], ECBI/SESBI-R [ 178 ], and MOAS [ 179 ], while one study used a combination of two instruments, namely, the ABC and MOAS [ 102 ].…”

“…Verbal aggression and hostility are rarely addressed in the intervention literature, presumably because aggressive behaviors associated with greater risk (e.g., physical aggression, self-injury, elopement) are prioritized as intervention targets. Training DSPs in broad strategies of positive behavior supports (PBS) (Klaver et al, 2020) or applied behavior analysis in addition to specific, individualized behavior intervention plans can increase DSP understanding of how to reduce the incidence of interpersonal aggression when it occurs. Using planned ignoring or extinction to address verbal aggression and hostility may be effective in decreasing opportunities for reinforcement of these behaviors; however, the targets of verbal aggression may also benefit from applying antecedent or reinforcement-based strategies to stop or redirect the behavior.…”
