First steps for integrating sex and gender considerations into basic experimental biomedical research

Abstract: In recent decades there has been an increasing recognition of the need to account for sex and gender in biology and medicine, in order to develop a more comprehensive understanding of biological phenomena and to address gaps in medical knowledge that have arisen due to a generally masculine bias in research. We have noted that as basic experimental biomedical researchers, we face unique challenges to the incorporation of sex and gender in our work, and that these have remained largely unarticulated, misunderst… Show more

“…Guidelines for applying these concepts to health research have also been developed [17,46]. Springer, Stellman, and Jordan-Young [47] have developed good practice guidelines for research on sex, gender, and male–female health differences, while Ritz et al [48] have proposed an approach for basic experimental researchers to take sex and gender differences into account.…”

“…1). In humans, gender refers to cultural attitudes that shape "feminine" and "masculine" behaviors that are learned and vary by culture, historical era, and ethnicity (17,18). In animal research, "gender" refers to investigators' differing attitudes toward and handling of male or female animals.…”
