Abstract: The findings of this study demonstrate human exposure to hantavirus in Mozambique for the first time; however, further studies should be conducted to investigate its clinical implications.

“…Due to the non-pathognomonic nature of CCHF clinical presentations, the disease has a wide range of possible etiologies including other VHFs, such as HFRS.In the present study, serological evidence of Hantavirus infection was observed among CCHF-negative cases. However, in agreement with previous studies,8,14,15 none of the specimens was positive for a Hantavirus genome. This may be explained by the fact that viremia persists only for a few days14 and a viral RNA cannot be detected in the majority of the infections, especially in mild cases 16,17.…”

“…4 Recently, the significance of Hantaviruses to public health has intensified notably as an increasing number of infections in humans and reservoirs has been reported from different countries in the Americas and Eurasia. 4,7,8 About 150,000 to 200,000 cases of Hantavirus diseases are diagnosed in Asia and Europe each year 4 where the epidemiology is mostly studied, as well as in the Americas and Far East Asia. 4,7,8 However, little is known about their circulation in Africa, the Indian subcontinent, and the Middle East.…”

“…In addition, the use of only serological testing minimizes reliability due to other potential infections in the region that tend to produce cross‐reactive antibodies. A recent case study of 200 febrile patients, attending the out patient appointment clinic at a primary health care center at Mozambique, demonstrated the presence of IgM, and IgG antibodies in the serum samples of four patients . In the European continent, Eastern Europe accounts for most of the infections with an average of 7476 cases reported between 1999 and 2008.…”

“…A surveillance system was established in 2015 to monitor the occurrence of arboviruses and other emerging viruses as well as building capacity for early detection of these emerging pathogens. Data from the established surveillance for emerging viruses found cases of dengue, chikungunya, Rift Valley fever, hantavirus, and Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever across different sentinel sites (Chau et al, 2017;Mugabe et al, 2018;Muianga et al, 2017;Oludele et al, 2017). These results have driven the establishment of diagnostic capacity for early detection of and rapid response to emerging viruses in Mozambique.…”
