First results of the CALICE SDHCAL technological prototype

Abstract: The CALICE Semi-Digital Hadronic Calorimeter (SDHCAL) prototype, built in 2011, was exposed to beams of hadrons, electrons and muons in two short periods in 2012 on two different beam lines of the CERN SPS. The prototype with its 48 active layers, made of Glass Resistive Plate Chambers and their embedded readout electronics, was run in triggerless and power-pulsing mode. The performance of the SDHCAL during the test beam was found to be very satisfactory with an efficiency exceeding 90% for almost all of the 4… Show more

“…Similar ideas govern the use of semi-digital readout rather than purely binary readout. Fraction of hits recorded above the highest threshold are correlated with the electromagnetic fraction and hence energy reconstruction with multi-threshold mode in SDHCAL improves the energy resolution [21] (see Figure 2 right).…”

“…1, shows the linearity of the energy response as a function of the beam energy after the application of a correction function to compensate for saturation effects [2]. Reference [3] demonstrates that the additional threshold available in the SDHCAL moderates the saturation effect. Figure 1: Left: Linearity of the DHCAL [2].…”

“…The prototypes for hadron calorimeters called AHCAL, TCMT, DHCAL and SDHCAL feature a typical overall size of 1 m 3 . The prototypes for electromagnetic calorimeters called SiW ECAL and ScW ECAL feature a typical size of 20 × 20 × 20 cm 3 . 'Analogue' Readout indicates that the analogue information is digitised into much more than 2-bits.…”

“…This would allow for having a high enough granularity to study the fine details of the hadronic shower evolutions and at the same time use the semi-digital charge signal for the analysis. A prototype semi-digital calorimeter for the ILD concept has been built and tested in beams and shows promising results [73]. A gaseous readout system has another feature which might be of advantage for a particle flow calorimeter.…”
