First results of spatial reconstruction and quantification of COVID-19 chest CT infiltrates using lung CT analyzer and 3D slicer

Abstract: Objective Lung CT scans are early diagnostic tests in evaluation of COVID-19 patients. Data are usually analyzed visually and the extent of infiltrations can only roughly be estimated. The aim of the present study was to create a software to spatially visualize and quantify infiltrated and collapsed areas in lung CT scans and set these volumes into relation with non-affected lung areas. Methods A new software "Lung CT Analyze… Show more

“…Total segmented lobe volume was validated against total segmented lung volume. 3D Slicer was used to segment the COVID-19 affected GGO and consolidated regions of the lungs at end-inspiratory and end-expiratory phases using the LungCTAnalyzer [ 27 ] extension of the Chest Imaging Platform ( Fig. 1 b).…”

“…Inflated lung Hounsfield unit thresholds were determined based on the study by Kassin et al [ 28 ] with a range of −1000 to −650 HU. The difference between ground glass opacities and consolidated regions were determined based on the 3D Slicer Chest Imaging Platform [ 24 ] and Lung CT Analyzer [ 27 ] ( https://github.com/rbumm/SlicerLungCTAnalyzer ) extensions preset values for COVID-19 lung analysis.

“…A group blinded volumetric analysis and visualization in 3D Slicer (http://www.slicer.org) on hard kernel chest CT image reconstructions using the open-source Lung CT Analyzer project tool (https://github.com/rbumm/ SlicerLungCTAnalyzer/) was performed (26). The volumetric analysis proved robust for lung segmentation under the presence of severe pneumonia (see Figure 2A-2E) (26,27). The total 3D volume of each lung side was assessed (see Figure 2D) (26).…”
