Abstract. The performances of satellite and sondes ozone measuring instruments available in the tropics between 10 and 26 km during the southern hemisphere summer in 2003 and 2004, have been investigated by comparison with series of profiles obtained by solar occultation in the visible Chappuis bands using a SAOZ UV-Vis spectrometer carried by long duration balloons. When compared to SAOZ, systematic positive or negative altitude shifts are observed in the satellite profiles, varying from <50 m for the GOMOS v6.0b stellar occultation instrument, followed by +100/200 m for solar occultation systems (SAGE II v6.2, HALOE v19 above 22 km), but as large as −900 m for the OSIRIS limb viewing system. The ozone relative biases are generally limited, between −4% and +4%, for measurements in the visible Chappuis bands (SAGE II and SAGE III moon v3, GOMOS above 22 km and OSIRIS), the near IR (HALOE above 22 km) and the ozonesondes, but increase to +5.5% (SCIAMACHY IUP v1.63) though still in the visible, and +7% in the mid-IR (MI-PAS NL v4.61) and the submillimetric range (SMR v222). Regarding precision, evaluated statistically from the zonal variability of ozone concentration, the best measurements are found to be those of SAGE II (2%), followed by HALOE above 22 km (3-4%), then the ozonesondes, SAGE III moon, SCIAMACHY and OSIRIS (4-5%), GOMOS above 22 km (∼6%), MIPAS (8.5%) and finally SMR (16%). Overall, all satellite ozone measurements appear to be of little utility in the tropical troposphere except those of SAGE II (and eventually SAGE III), though low biased by 50% and of limited (50%) precision.

ABSTRACT:The deuterium content of water vapour in a given air mass is sensitive to its temperature and condensation history. Isotopic measurements therefore have the potential to shed light on the transport of air and water vapour into the stratosphere. Previous measurements of the isotopic composition in the upper troposphere and stratosphere have been sparse in terms of both spatial and temporal coverage. Presented here are retrievals of the deuterium content of water vapour (HDO or δD) from the Michelson Interferometer for Passive Atmospheric Sounding (MIPAS) satellite instrument. These retrievals offer the first global scale coverage of the isotopic composition of water vapour in this altitude region and span a time period of almost two years. The spatial coverage and the time span of the dataset offer previously unattainable insight into the mean seasonal and spatial distributions of the isotopic composition of water vapour in the upper troposphere and stratosphere. Measurements of HDO are extremely challenging due to low sensitivity in the spectra at low temperatures and water vapour amounts. Nonetheless, the data show a number of interesting results. Zonal mean profiles show the greatest depletion in δD in the tropical upper troposphere, with decreasing depletion with altitude in the stratosphere due to the influence of methane oxidation. Seasonal zonal means also show a strong depletion in the southern polar spring at around 300 mbar, which is thought to be related to the occurrence of polar stratospheric clouds and dehydration events in the polar vortex. Geographically, the regions and time periods where the greatest depletions are observed in the tropical upper troposphere are those associated with strong convective activity. Results confirm that temporal variability is central to the transport of water vapour into the tropical tropopause layer (TTL) and stratosphere. The data presented here show an annual cycle in δD in the TTL which is tied to temperature and suggests that this signature propagates upwards into the stratosphere. The data also show a number of points where extremely dry air is associated with relatively enriched δD values. We postulate that these points are evidence of ice lofting.

Abstract. MIPAS, the Michelson Interferometer for Passive Atmospheric Sounding, is a mid-infrared emission spectrometer which is part of the core payload of ENVISAT. It is a limb sounder, i.e. it scans across the horizon detecting atmospheric spectral radiances which are inverted to vertical temperature, trace species and cloud distributions. These data can be used for scientific investigations in various research fields including dynamics and chemistry in the altitude region between upper troposphere and lower thermosphere.The instrument is a well calibrated and characterized Fourier transform spectrometer which is able to detect many trace constituents simultaneously. The different concepts of retrieval methods are described including multi-target and two-dimensional retrievals. Operationally generated data sets consist of temperature, H 2 O, O 3 , CH 4 , N 2 O, HNO 3 , and NO 2 profiles. Measurement errors are investigated in detail and random and systematic errors are specified. The results are validated by independent instrumentation which has been operated at ground stations or aboard balloon gondolas and aircraft. Intercomparisons of MIPAS measurements with other satellite data have been carried out, too. As a result, itCorrespondence to: H. Fischer (herbert.fischer@imk.fzk.de) has been proven that the MIPAS data are of good quality.MIPAS can be operated in different measurement modes in order to optimize the scientific output. Due to the wealth of information in the MIPAS spectra, many scientific results have already been published. They include intercomparisons of temperature distributions with ECMWF data, the derivation of the whole NO y family, the study of atmospheric processes during the Antarctic vortex split in September 2002, the determination of properties of Polar Stratospheric Clouds, the downward transport of NO x in the middle atmosphere, the stratosphere-troposphere exchange, the influence of solar variability on the middle atmosphere, and the observation of Non-LTE effects in the mesosphere.
