First report on detection of Babesia spp. in confiscated Sunda pangolins (Manis javanica) in Thailand

Abstract: Background and Aim: The Sunda pangolin (Manis javanica) is on the International Union for Conservation of Nature Red List of Threatened Species (critically endangered) due to high levels of illegal trafficking for its products. Thailand is one of the habitats of this species, and it has become the main hub for its illegal trafficking. Rehabilitating these captive pangolins and reintroducing them back to the wild are challenging due to the limited knowledge on their diet, management, and diseases. Hemoparasites… Show more

“…Cardiomyopathy is the most common clinical outcome, and, until 2019, Trypanosoma infections and the associated disease ( Trypanosomiasis ) were endemic in 36 sub-Saharan African countries [ 26 ]. Strategies employed by trypanosomes to evade the host immune system include antigenic variation, induction of suppressor macrophages, myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSCs), and regulatory T cells [ 27 ].…”

“…Another parasitic disease [ 27 ] endemic on many continents [ 28 ] is babesiosis, a tickborne infection transmitted to humans by the bite of Ixodes scapularis , harbouring the parasite Babesia microti (B. microti) [ 29 ]. Prevalent in vertebrates, B. microti was recently found in 53 confiscated rare Sunda pangolins native to Thailand [ 27 ]. Moreover, additional reports found evidence of SARS-CoV-2-related coronaviruses circulating in Sunda pangolins [ 28 ].…”
