First Report of Vicia Cryptic Virus M Infecting Cowpea (Vigna unguiculata) in China

Abstract: Cowpea (Vigna unguiculata) is a crop grown worldwide as a protein source for food and feed (Lonardi et al. 2019). During the summer of 2019, noticeable virus-like symptoms such as mosaic, leaf narrowing, stunt and chlorosis were observed on cowpeas ‘Xianfeng’ planted in Yangzhou city and its suburbs, Jiangsu Province, East China (Supplementary Fig. S1A). The total RNA was extracted from both symptomatic and asymptomatic plants by RNAiso Plus (TaKaRa, Dalian, China) and sRNAs were separated and recovered by gel… Show more

“…The second virus identified in M. japonicus RNA-seq data was MjVB with a genome of 3362 nt. Sequence database searches revealed that the MjVB genome contained an RdRp domain similar to those of amalgaviruses, including Cleome droserifolia amalgavirus 1 (CdAV1), Gevuina avellana amalgavirus 1, Medicago sativa amalgavirus 1 (MsAV1), and Vicia cryptic virus M (VCV-M) (Nibert et al, 2016;Zhang et al, 2020). The MjVB genome sequence has two ORFs, namely, ORF1 and ORF2, whose organization is universally observed in all known amalgaviruses (Fig.…”

“…A nivel mundial (V. unguiculata) se encuentra ampliamente cultivada, principalmente en África, América del Sur, algunas partes de Asia y los Estados Unidos, debido a su importancia como fuente de proteína (Zhang et al, 2021), la especie tiene varios nombres con las que se le conoce como fréjol caupí, cowpea o chícharo de vaca en lengua inglesa, frijol de costa, frijol carita y caupí (Báez-Hernández & Hernández-Medina, 2016).…”
