First report of the invasive mosquito species Aedes koreicus in the Swiss-Italian border region

Abstract: BackgroundIn 2012 and 2013, an entomological survey of Aedes albopictus, the Asian tiger mosquito, was carried out in the border region of southern Switzerland and northern Italy, using ovitraps. In July 2013, besides A. albopictus already known to the region several unusual eggs were recovered.FindingsA total of 548 seemingly different eggs were found within three communities: Chiasso (Switzerland), and Como and Brunate (Italy). Proteomic diagnostics based on matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass-s… Show more

“…Since 2012, the monitoring has been extended in the whole Province of Belluno and in the neighbouring Provinces (Vicenza, Treviso, Trento, Pordenone and Verona). An additional monitoring was carried out in north-western Italy (Lombardia Region) in 2014, due to its proximity to another infested area in Switzerland [ 5 ]. All possible breeding sites, such as catch basins, man-made containers, tires and natural mosquito larval habitats were checked and the larvae collected.…”

“…japonicus) of the Alps (Schaffner et al, 2009;Flacio et al, 2015b). Two additional alien species, Aedes koreicus (Edwards) and Aedes cretinus (Edwards) (Suter et al, 2015;Flacio et al, 2015b) were recently identified for the first time in Switzerland during vector surveillance activities that used protein profiling methods to identify aedine eggs collected in ovitraps . In the current study, a total of 21 taxa were identified (Table 1).…”

“…By keeping the specimen intact, complementary analysis on the same specimen is possible, such as insecticide susceptibility or vector competence. Henceforth, mosquito identification could then be done at a different development stage using MALDI-TOF MS biotyping, including pre-hatching [43], larval/pupal stages [22], imago [20] and now using their exuviae.…”
