First report of the Opuntia cochineal scale Dactylopius opuntiae (Hemiptera: Dactylopiidae) in Morocco

Abstract

The Opuntia cochineal scale Dactylopius opuntiae (Cockerell) (Hemiptera: Dactylopiidae) causes severe damage to prickly pear (Opuntia ficus‐indica (L.) Miller). This scale insect was first detected in Morocco in 2015 during sampling in the cactus crop in the Sidi Bennour region (120 km north‐west of Marrakech). Methods for sampling, preservation and identification are described. Although this scale insect can be used for the production of the natural dye carmine, the damage it can cause is considerable. A pest risk analysis should be carried out and the ensuing management measures implemented to prevent severe economic and ecological losses.

Sources de résistance d'Opuntia spp. contre la cochenille à carmin, Dactylopius opuntiae, au Maroc

Predatory potential of eleven native Moroccan adult ladybird species on different stages of Dactylopius opuntiae (Cockerell) (Hemiptera: Dactylopiidae)

Miller in many countries around the world such as Mexico (Portillo & Vigueras, 2006;Vanegas-Rico et al, 2010), Brazil (Oliveira et al, 2013), Spain, Ethiopia, Italy, Turkey, Lebanon and Israel (Portillo, 2009;Spodek et al, 2014;Garc ıa Morales et al, 2016) and recently in Morocco (Bouharroud et al, 2016). In the Mediterranean area, this dactylopiid was reported in Europe and the Middle East (Bouharroud et al, 2016). Since its first recording in Sidi Bennour, Doukkala, Morocco in 2014, D. opuntiae has caused severe damage in several areas of cactus production in Morocco, in particular in the Doukkala, Rhamna, Bengrir, Abda, Azilal, Benimellal, Taourirt, Haouz and Chaouia where tens of thousands hectares of cactus have been destroyed, causing enormous socio-economic and environmental losses.…”
