First Report of Sexual Reproduction of Fusarium solani f. sp. piperis in Bahia, Brazil

Abstract: Black pepper (Piper nigrum L.) is a popular spice native of India, and Brazil is one of its most important producing countries. The main disease of black pepper in Brazil is fusariosis, caused by Fusarium solani f. sp. piperis. Symptoms include leaf chlorosis and defoliation, blight of stems or stem cuttings, and root and foot decay. During surveys conducted in the south of the state of Bahia, municipalities of Taperoá (13°34'S, 39°10'W) and Valencia (13°20'S, 39°14'W), stems of diseased plants covered with re… Show more

“…For example, macroconidia with mostly five septa were found in F. solani isolates; macroconidia with hook-shaped apical cell were observed in F. oxysporum isolates; and woolly textured aerial mycelia were observed in F. proliferatum isolates. Clusters of perithecia found on upper view of the colony for both Fs-6SDM and Fs-8JD also matched with the description for N. haematococca, sexual form of F. solani, by Wu et al (2011) andVaz et al (2012).…”

“…In the presence of its host, mycelium from germinating spores penetrate the roots and enter the vascular system (xylem) where it multiplies and causes the host to develop wilting symptoms. e spread of ascospores (sexual spores) from perithecia (sexual fruiting bodies) is also one of the main inoculum sources of the fusarium wilt disease on adjacent pepper plants [45,46].…”

“…Beberapa peneliti melaporkan bahwa di Brazil, penyakit kuning disebabkan oleh jamur F. solani f.sp. piperis (Hamada et al, 1988;Duarte & Archer, 2003;Carnaúba et al, 2007;Vaz et al, 2012). Di Vietnam, Thuy (2010) melaporkan bahwa penyakit kuning disebabkan oleh interaksi antara M. incognita dengan F. solani.…”
