FIRST REPORT OFTHELAZIA CALLIPAEDAIN RED FOXES (VULPES VULPES) FROM PORTUGAL

Abstract: The first cases of infection with the eyeworm Thelazia callipaeda (Spirurida, Thelaziidae) in red foxes (Vulpes vulpes) from Portugal are described. Worms were collected from 1 fox (7 worms) in the north and from 2 foxes (10 worms) in the central region of the country. Partial molecular amplification of mitochondrial cythocrome c oxidase subunit 1 gene and sequencing revealed a 100% homology with T. callipaeda haplotype 1, which is the sequence type circulating in Europe. Data suggest that wildlife participate… Show more

“…Therefore, the increased number of cases of T. callipaeda infection in Europe reported in the literature may be partly explained by the growing awareness of veterinarians and parasitologists, but may also indicate that canine thelaziosis is emerging in some European areas. Importantly, where the infection in dogs is prevalent, it has also been reported in other host species such as cats (Maia et al, 2014) and foxes (Malacrida et al, 2008;Hodžić et al, 2014;Sargo et al, 2014).…”

“…Cats have been also implicated in clinical cases of ocular infections with T. callipaeda , with reports from Italy, France, Portugal and Switzerland [ 5 , 7 , 10 , 28 - 31 ]. Recent data suggest also the potential reservoir role of wildlife in natural transmission cycles of this spirurid [ 32 - 34 ].…”

“…The first cases of thelaziosis in Portugal were reported in the North region of the country in 10 dogs and one cat (Rodrigues et al., ; Vieira et al., ; Pimenta et al., ) and afterwards in one cat from the Centre of Portugal (Soares et al., ), suggesting a southerly expansion in the vector distribution or even the introduction of infected hosts in areas where P. variegata had already been present. T. callipaeda infection has recently been detected in one fox from the municipality of Sabugal (Sargo et al., ), a Portuguese area contiguous to the Spanish provinces of Salamanca (on the east) and Cáceres (on the southeast), where dogs, foxes and one human have been found infected with T. callipaeda (Miró et al., ; Bello‐Gavete et al., ; Fuentes et al., ; Calero‐Bernal et al., ).…”
