First report ofSquash leaf curl china viruscausing mosaic symptoms on summer squash (Cucurbita pepo) grown in Varanasi district of India

Abstract: Severe incidence of a mosaic disease was observed on summer squash (Cucurbita pepo), commonly called pepo, grown in Varanasi during June-September of Khariff season 2007. Symptoms observed were mosaic, puckering on the leaves, wartiness on fruits, general stunting of plants and low yield. PCR amplification with degenerate primers designed to target the conserved sequences of coat protein gene of whitefly transmitted geminiviruses showed *800 bp fragment in all symptomatic samples tested, indicating the associa… Show more

“…The SLCCNV caused symptoms of leaf curling and blistering on wax gourd, symptoms of leaf curling and blistering on oriental melon, leaf curling, blistering and yellow spots on pumpkin and squash. Those symptoms are similar to what was previously described [13,14,16,18]. The SLCCNV-infected bottle gourd exhibited symptoms of leaf curling and yellowing, which are similar to those described previously as of chlorotic mottling, mild curling and serious stunting [15].…”

“…ToLCNDV have been recorded in India [29], Southeast Asia [3], Spain [30], the Mediterranean [31] and Taiwan [32]. SLCCNV is currently distributed in China [33], India [14][15][16][17] and Southeast Asia [12,13,34]. The SLCuPV was identified in the Philippines and Taiwan [5,19].…”

“…SLCCV has been reported from different cucurbit hosts. SLCCV infecting squash (Cucurbita pepo) reduced production in India and Pakistan and resulted in huge economic losses (Saritha et al, 2011;Tahir et al, 2010b). SLCCV have also been reported from cucurbits like pumpkin (Vo et al, 2022), ash gourd (Riyaz et al, 2015) and melon (Wu et al, 2020).…”

“…Begomoviruses possess either monopartite genome DNA A or bipartite genomes DNA A and B (Asigul et al, 2018). Squash leaf curl China virus (SLCCNV) belongs to the genus Begomovirus and is an important bipartite virus that causes severe economic losses in Cucurbitaceae crops such as wax gourd, squash, and pumpkin (Saritha et al, 2011;Riyaz et al, 2013;Maina et al, 2017). The disease incidence in ash gourds can reach 100% in the field (Riyaz et al, 2013).…”
