First Report of Cucurbit chlorotic yellows virus on Cucumber in Lebanon

Abstract: In the summer of 2011, whiteflies (Bemisia tabaci) were collected from cucumbers plants showing interveinal yellowing on the lower leaves growing in commercial greenhouses in Jiyye area, South Lebanon. About twenty whiteflies per seedling were placed on healthy cucumber (Cucumis sativus cv. Beit alpha) seedlings at the second-leaf stage and grown in insect-proof cages in the university glasshouse. After 4 days of feeding, the whiteflies were sprayed with an insecticide (Imidacloprid). Three weeks post inoculat… Show more

“…CCYV was firstly identified in melon plants in Japan, and is now widespread throughout China, Sudan, Lebanon, Iran and Egypt1213141516171819. CCYV can cause chlorotic leaf spots and complete yellowing of leaves in cucumber, melon, watermelon, pumpkin, loofah plants and Nicotiana benthamiana , resulting in yield and economic losses12.…”

“…According to Gil-Salas et al [27], zucchini squash is a symptomless host of CYSDV. The yellowing symptoms induced by mixed viral infections of CCYV and CYSDV in melon or cucumber are indistinguishable from singly infected plants with either virus [5].…”

“…This virus has recently moved from Japan in eastern Asia to Sudan, Lebanon and Iran [5,30]. So far CCYV seems to be spreading competitively with CYSDV in Lebanon; where about 60 % of the cucumber samples collected in 2012/2013 showed mixed infections of CCYV and CYSDV (P.E.…”

“…Cucurbit chlorotic yellows virus (CCYV) is a recently found cucurbit-infecting crinivirus within the family Closteroviridae (Abrahamian et al, 2012;Gu et al, 2011;Hamed et al, 2011;Okuda et al, 2010). The bipartite RNA genome (8607 nt RNA1 and 8041 nt RNA2) of CCYV is among the largest single-stranded positive-sense RNA viruses (Martelli et al, 2012).…”
