Oomycete pseudofungus (Peronospora belbahrii) is a causal of devastating basil downy mildew disease because once infected basil plants are no longer marketable. The host range is limited to basil and hyssop. Coleus was previously considered as host as well, but pathogen causing downy mildew on coleus has been shown genetically different and specified as P. belbahrii sensu lato. Therefore, P. belbahrii is described as a complex species, likely defined by plant host. The P. belbahrii is air-borne and seed-borne pathogen and it does not need a vector for dispersal. The disease was firstly reported from Africa where it is assumed to have originated on sweet basil and 70 years later it was reported from Europe. Currently, basil downy mildew is of pandemic occurrence and the pathogen is present in almost all areas around the world where basil is cultivated. Since the pathogen is transmitted by the seed, there is a high risk of the pathogen spread by the seed trade.

The downy mildew species parasitic to Mentheae are of particular interest, as this tribe of Lamiaceae contains a variety of important medicinal plants and culinary herbs. Over the past two decades, two pathogens, Peronospora belbahrii and Pe. salviae-officinalis have spread globally, impacting basil and common sage production, respectively. In the original circumscription of Pe. belbahrii, the downy mildew of coleus (Plectranthus scutellarioides) was ascribed to this species in the broader sense, but subtle differences in morphological and molecular phylogenetic analyses using two genes suggested that this pathogen would potentially need to be assigned to a species of its own. In the present study, Peronospora species causing downy mildew on members of the Mentheae, including clary sage (Salvia sclarea), meadow sage (S. pratensis), basil (Ocimum basilicum), ground ivy (Glechoma hederacea) and coleus (Plectranthus scutellarioides) were studied using light microscopy and molecular phylogenetic analyses based on six loci (ITS rDNA, cox1, cox2, ef1a, hsp90 and β-tubulin) to clarify the species boundaries in the Pe. belbahrii species complex. The downy mildew on Salvia pratensis is shown to be distinct from Pe. salviae-officinalis and closely related to Pe. glechomae, and is herein described as a new species, Pe. salviae-pratensis. The downy mildew on S. sclarea was found to be caused by Pe. salviae-officinalis. This is of phytopathological importance, because meadow sage thus does not play a role as inoculum source for common sage in the natural habitat of the former in Europe and Asia, while clary sage probably does. The multi-gene phylogeny revealed that the causal agent of downy mildew on coleus is distinct from Pe. belbahrii on basil, and is herein described as a new taxon, Pe. choii.

Penyakit bulai merupakan salah satu penyakit utama yang menyerang tanaman jagung yang dapat menurunkan produksi jagung di Indonesia. Penyakit bulai pada jagung disebabkan oleh Peronosclerospora spp. yang bersifat parasit obligat sehingga tidak dapat ditumbuhkan di media kutur sintetik. Upaya pengendalian penyakit dengan penggunaan varietas jagung yang tahan penyakit bulai dan penggunaan fungisida seringkali tidak memberikan hasil yang diharapkan, karena patogen penyebab penyakit bulai yang beragam jenisnya sehingga memberikan respon yang berbeda pula. Identifikasi dan pemahaman tentang biodiversitas patogen penyebab penyakit bulai sangat penting dalam upaya pengendalian penyakit bulai. Identifikasi spesies secara morfologis terkadang sulit dilakukan karena karakter pembeda yang terbatas dan mirip. Metode biologi molekuler saat ini mulai secara luas digunakan, karena dapat memberikan informasi keragaman dari suatu organisme secara genetik secara cepat dan akurat. Oleh karena itu metode biologi molekuler dapat digunakan untuk mendukung hasil pengamatan secara morfologis. Penggunaan marka molekuler seperti RAPD, RFLP, AFLP dan SSR serta sekuensing region DNA tertentu (rDNA, region ITS rDNA dan mtDNA) secara langsung dapat menggambarkan keanekaragaman patogen penyakit bulai. Di Indonesia terdapat tiga spesies utama penyebab bulai yaitu P. philippinensis, P. maydis dan P. sorghi. Kedepan penggunaan teknik-teknik biologi molekuler baru dapat memberikan informasi yang lebih banyak, cepat, dan akurat akan dapat membuka lebih banyak kemungkinan bagi upaya pengendalian penyakit ini.
