First Report of Coffee Leaf Rust Caused by Hemileia vastatrix on Coffee (Coffea arabica) in Hawaii

Abstract: Coffee is one of the most economically valuable specialty crops for which Hawaii is famous. It is produced commercially on >6,900 acres across six islands by more than 1,470 growers. It has a raw crop value of $55.9 million, while the value-added benefits of coffee-related industries exceed $148.5 million (USDA, 2021). In addition to high product quality, Hawaii also has the distinction of being the last major coffee growing region that is free of coffee leaf rust (CLR), a highly damaging disease caused by … Show more

“…Amongst these limitations of coffee production is its most devastating disease: coffee leaf rust (CLR) caused by Hemileia vastatrix (Pucciniales: Zaghouaniaceae), a biotrophic fungus [ 5 ]. The recent report of CLR in Hawaii means that CLR has now spread to every significant coffee-growing region in the world [ 6 ]. The search for a sustainable, nonchemical and effective form of management for CLR is a major challenge [ 7 , 8 ].…”

“…In the Americas, CLR was first detected in Brazil in 1970 and dispersed progressively across the coffee plantations of other Latin American countries [11][12][13]. In Hawaii, CLR was reported for the first time in 2020 [14]. Nowadays, CLR is present in all the coffee growing regions.…”

“…), prior to the first discovery of CLR in October 2020 by the Hawaii Department of Agriculture (HDOA) on Haiku, Maui [18]. By July 2021, the disease was confirmed on all major islands of Hawaii where coffee is commercially grown, including Hawaii Island, Lanai, Oahu, Molokai, and Kauai [19] (Figure 1). Pruning methods and spraying approved fungicides were recommended to decrease the infection of CLR in non-resistant coffee varieties in Hawaii [20,21].…”
