First report of canine ocular thelaziosis in the Muntenia Region, Romania

Abstract: Ocular thelaziosis by Thelazia callipaeda is a vector-borne disease that infects domestic and wild carnivores as well as humans. In this paper, we present two cases of ocular thelaziosis in dogs that had never traveled outside Romania. Both presented with moderate conjunctivitis and ocular discharge. In total, 41 adult nematodes were removed from the conjunctival sacs of both dogs; these were identified via morphology as T. callipaeda. “…In Romania, the infection was so far reported only in dogs [ 6 , 12 , 13 ] and despite the abundant wild carnivore populations [ 14 ], there are no reports of this nematode in wildlife. The aim of this study was to evaluate the role of wild carnivores in the natural cycle of T. callipaeda in Romania.…”

“…Dirofilaria repens is distributed in Europe and in Asia and may cause a wide range of symptoms in people based on the tissue involved during migration and the location of the final subcutaneous nodular lesions [53]. Human thelaziosis caused by the two feline eyeworm species, Thelazia callipaeda and Thelazia californiensis, may manifest as conjunctivitis, but keratitis and corneal ulcers can also occur [54][55][56].…”

“…In Romania, T. callipaeda infection was documented in domestic dogs [1113] and domestic cats [14]. Subsequent research targeting wild canids and felids also revealed the occurrence of the parasite in gray wolves ( Canis lupus ), golden jackals ( Canis aureus ), wildcats ( Felis silvestris ) [15] and red foxes ( Vulpes vulpes ) [16], pointing out a wide host spectrum of the parasite.…”
