First Reference Curves of Waist and Hip Circumferences in An Asian Population of Youths: CASPIAN Study

Abstract: The Objective of the present study is to develop the first age- and gender-specific reference curves for waist and hip circumferences in an Asian population of youths. This cross-sectional population survey was conducted in 2003-04 on a nationally representative sample of 21111 school-students living in urban (84.6%) and rural (15.4%) areas of 23 provinces in Iran. After anthropometric measurements, smoothed reference curves for waist and hip circumference (WC, HiC) and waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) were developed … Show more

“…Overweight and obesity were defined as BMI ˃ 85 th and ˃ 95 th percentile with respect to age and sex of CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) curves, respectively (14). WC of more than 90 th percentile for age and sex according to national references was considered as central obesity (15,16). Nutritional knowledge was assessed using a questionnaire consisting of 14 questions.…”

“…In this study MetS in adolescents was defined, based on a modified definition of de Ferranti [12], as having at least 3 of the following components: Fasting plasma glucose concentration ≥ 110 mg/dL, fasting serum triglycerides≥ 100 mg/dL, HDL-C< 45 mg/dL for boys, aged 15-19 years and <50 mg/dL for others; WC≥ 75th percentile for the age and sex of Iranian population (based on the CASPIAN study) [13]; systolic and diastolic blood pressure> 90th percentile for age, sex, and height based on the recommendations of National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute. Since WC percentiles for Iranian populations have been reported only up to the age of 18 years for individuals aged > 18, high WC was considered based on the criteria of Iranian adults (> 95cm in both sexes) [14].…”
