First record of the Indo-Pacific Cymothoa indica (Crustacea, Isopoda, Cymothoidae), a Lessepsian species in the Mediterranean Sea

Abstract: Cymothoa indica, a typical Indo-Pacific genus and species, is reported for the first time in the eastern Mediterranean Sea. Specimens were found parasitizing mainly barracudas (Sphyraenidae) from Lebanon. Female and male specimens are described on collected materials. To date, the genus Cymothoa has not been reported in the Mediterranean Sea although it is widely represented in other areas of the world. It is suggested that C. indica should be added to the list of exotic species introduced from the Red Sea and… Show more

“…Most of the taxonomic descriptions of the cymothoids are based primarily on ovigerous females; the various life cycle stages (excepting perhaps the premanca/manca of few Cymothoa sp.) have not received much attention thus far (Richardson 1905;Sartor and Pires 1988;Thatcher et al 2003Thatcher et al , 2007Trilles and Bariche 2006;Hadfield et al 2011). Keeping these in view, the present paper addresses the question of precise identification of the cymothoid C. frontalis infesting the belonid fish inhabiting the Malabar Coast.…”

“…Interest in eastern Mediterranean cymothoids has increased in the last decade and about 20 species have been confirmed along the Levantine basin to date (Horton 2000;Öktener and Trilles 2004;Bariche and Trilles 2005, 2008Horton et al 2005;Trilles and Bariche 2006). The situation is similar along the Mediterranean coasts of Africa, where various cymothoid species have recently been identified as well.…”

“…The cymothoid fauna of the entire area can be considered largely understudied, particularly along the southeastern Mediterranean coast where introduced species prosper. So far three exotic cymothoids, namely Cymothoa indica Schioedte et Meinert, 1884, and Anilocra pilchardi , both Lessepsian migrants, and Ceratothoa collaris Schioedte et Meinert, 1883, an exotic from the Atlantic Ocean, have been recorded from Lebanon Trilles 2006, 2008;Trilles and Bariche 2006).…”

“…Surveying through the literature it is evident that most of the descriptions of cymothoids are based only on ovigerous females; other life-cycle stages have not received much attention (Richardson, 1905;Sartor & Pires, 1988;Thatcher et al, 2003Thatcher et al, , 2007Trilles & Bariche, 2006;Hadfield et al, 2011;Aneesh et al, 2015b). Males and females and their larval stages (premanca and/or manca) have been described for five Cymothoa spp.…”
