Two brief biodiversity surveys were conducted near Camp Lemonnier, Djibouti, in May 2014 and February 2016, and to the Day Forest (Forêt du Day) in February 2016. Our complete avian checklist of 143 species, with 96 species preserved as museum specimens is presented here. We document nesting for Spur-winged Lapwing Vanellus spinosus (Linnaeus, 1758), the occurrence of Crimson-rumped Waxbill Estrilda rhodopyga Sundevall, 1850, and confirm Little Tern Sternula albifrons (Pallas, 1764) in Djibouti. We comment on observations for the Critically Endangered Djibouti Spurfowl Pternistis ochropectus (Dorst & Jouanin 1952), and the Endangered Egyptian Vulture Neophron percnopterus (Linnaeus, 1758), and a previously noted Fringillidae (Crithagra sp.) Swainson, 1827 from the Day Forest. Hybridization between Somali Sparrow Passer castanopterus Blythi,1885 and House Sparrow Passer domesticus (Linnaeus, 1758) is documented with voucher specimens. Although these surveys and taxa lists represent brief inventories for the areas visited, they provide a foundation and reference for future work in this understudied region in the Horn of Africa.

Forthcoming MeetingThe next meeting of the Club will be held on Monday 25 March at 6.30pm (doors open at 6pm) upstairs in the Barley Mow, 104 Horseferry Road, London SW1P 2EE. Laura Vaughan-Hirsh will talk on The White Stork nesting in Sussex.The landscape in a small but expanding part the Low Weald in Sussex has changed for the better over the last decade. Laura Vaughan-Hirsch's talk will explain how White Storks Ciconia ciconia are part of this change, with optimism for biodiversity rather than the gloom so commonplace. On the Knepp Estate a bold transition from arable and dairy farming to a new landscape with a mosaic of unfenced fields grazed of Longhorn cattle, Exmoor ponies, Tamworth pigs and native deer. What has not changed is the Sussex marl and flood waters that come with heavy rains, a constant reminder that this was never going to be agricultural land with larger fields of well-drained loamy soil. Research suggests that the ecological requirements for White Storks seem to be the same everywhere, namely open, little wooded and somewhat wet land such as valleys of rivers and streams, cultivated fields, pastures and meadows, provided that they are not too dry or too much drained. On the Knepp Estate there is an aim to promote greater engagement between the public and wildlife in the countryside, so the highly visible and charismatic White Stork, with its history of nesting in close association with man, was an obvious first-choice addition. The talk will address the life cycle of the species in Sussex and the challenges faced by the birds and their fledglings.

The meeting was recorded and a video of the event is available online at https://youtu.be/KU7MPekp41c and also via the Club website https:// boc-online.org.Dr Richard Sales, renowned for his wide-ranging research and publications on raptors, notably British falcons, and Steve Watson, who has been conducting a decades-long field study on the Peregrine Falcon Falco peregrinus in Gloucestershire, jointly presented a very well-illustrated talk entitled The Peregrine Falcon, based on their groundbreaking recent book of the same name. Richard's area of special research interest, namely the interaction between anatomy and behaviour underlying the Peregrine's flight characteristics and prey capture, synergistically complemented the broader focus by Steve on ecology and population characteristics, resulting in a particularly comprehensive overview. Broader discussion of the wide range and complex taxonomy (approaching 20 subspecies according to most authorities) of the species was not neglected, and the authors' detailed research included fascinating novel nuggets of information, including that the Peregrine's visual acuity is likely to be even greater than generally understood.The 1009th meeting of the Club was held in conjunction with the Linnean Society of London at Burlington House, Piccadilly, London W1J 0BF, on Monday 6 November 2023 when Dr Will Smith spoke on Rock Doves and the process of 'extinction by hybridisation'. A detailed account of this meeting will be included in the March 2024 issue of the Bulletin.
