First record of predation of the paper nautilus Argonauta nouryi (Cephalopoda: Argonautidae) by the Common Black Hawk Buteogallus anthracinus (Accipitriformes: Accipitridae)

Abstract: Predation of cephalopods by non-marine birds is rare, especially within the Order Accipotriformes. Observations took place in situ and identification of Argonauta nouryi was entirely based on the shell form. The predation of the paper nautilus, A. nouryi, by the Common Black Hawk, Buteogallus anthracinus, is reported for the first time at the Murciélago Sector of the Santa Rosa National Park, Guanacaste, Costa Rica. This represents the first known bird predator of this species within the country. Keywords: Pred… Show more

“…Also, recent studies have also documented that Argonauts, when they are occasionally carried by the currents towards the coast, are not only a favorite prey of big fish but also some birds too, as the common black hawk Buteogallus anthracinus. 5 Therefore, it is considered that knowledge about the role of Argonaut mollusks in the marine trophic dynamics is still incipient.…”

“…Along the Pacific Coast of Mexico, 86% of the diet is comprised of fish (Thiollay 1994), whereas in Costa Rica, Common Black Hawks feed mainly on crabs (Stiles and Skutch 1989). That this opportunistic predator (e.g., Herrera and González 2017;Solórzano and Sasa 2017) would capture and consume a caecilian is not surprising.…”
